living; so does our Higher Power.
God, bring any blocks and barriers within me

concerning money to the surface.

Boaz and Ruth gave birth to Obed the father of Jesse the father of David who became the king of Israel. Get the picture?

Our Cottage by the Sea

I don't know what happened! One minute we were living in NYC, the next minute, here we are in our cottage by the sea! It all happened so quickly. Just a rented house, but still a house with 2 floors! Lots of kitchen cabinets and a huge yard and attic. We have only been here a few weeks, I want to hold on to the feeling of wow! But I feel it slipping away.
I am planting lots and lots of flowers to sell, I get to live out all my other dreams now, of gardening and flower farming and baking and teaching dollmaking and making things from herbs and edble flowers and having backyard parties under hanging lights.
Possibly starting an online class teaching how to make a waldorf doll.

Those are a few pages from the EBook. Mom gets and EBook and a skirt sewing tutorial and your little girl gets a specially written sewing tutorial in her "language" and the same skirt pattern for her doll.

This is my favorite ebook so far! I have lots of experience working with and around children. When my dd was in 1st grade, I had the briilliant idea (NOT!) to let every child, 100 of them, design and make their own doll from scratch. There were 100 completly different dolls. It was an experience I will never forget and I hope one that proved memorable for the kids.

We are raising money to buy a struggling family 2 AG Dolls for Christmas. The girls are 7 and 8. The older child has cancer and the father is out of work. The family wonlt know who sent everything, it will be a gift of support from a community of lovely and talented women. My daughter asked, if the family is strugging, why would we send something as trivial as dolls. Why? It is exactly during those times that you need somthing pleasant to remind yourself that life is good no matter how dark things get, And things are pretty dark for this family. And, I dont know if you have read these books, but they are historical stories about how 8 year old gitls lived and survived some hard times. One book I remember, was about a girl who lived in the 1930's and her mother had to take in people to pay the rent. The books are inspiring.

So first tell us where your from and who you are

I am Cynde Clark aka ~hipchic~ and the day I was born the World had to made room for a little more FANCY! I live and create in a perfect, one traffic light town on top of a mountain...but 10 minutes from the boat dock in Grant, Alabama. My day starts and usually ends with a steaming cup of Cinnamon Spice Coffee with Cocanut Cream in it. If it is a perfect day...the in between is filled with SEWING!
We built a small garage apartment 3 years ago right next to the town park, seriously..I can watch little league
baseball from my deck! Then my wonderful, hubby built me a fantastic and HUGE sewing studio on the first floor of
our home (he gave up two garage spaces for me and put in a spiral staircase!) This is where I love to spend all
day...when time allows! I am one lucky girl! I love sewing anything and everything I can dream up and loose all track of time when in my sewing studio.

That sounds Lovely...a mountain top Sewing room and Cinnamon Coffee. When are you inviting us over?!

So this is your first time trying to "SEW and Sell" as a business, what made you jump into this--did you always think about doing this?

For me it came down to "do what you love, love what you do" I love sewing and that is what I want to do! I had wanted to have a business for a long time, one day I just took the plunge and started HipChic Designs from my studio in AL about 2yrs ago. A friend actually told me about ETSY because of all the things she saw me making. Shortly after that I opened a shop for my bags and accessories, but then started playing with some fashion just for fun. I love making my own clothes and there was some interest in them.

My hipchic Etsy shop came about actually from the patchwork skirt....it was the start of it all. Adult clothes take a while to make, but the little versions are so fast! But I still love making both....therefore you will be seeing much of the Mommy and Me listings. You see....anything I make small...I would soooooo wear, and do! Yes I do get, "I couldn't pull that off, but I love it!" alot. I usually respond...thanks, you might be surprised...you could pull it off...It's all in the Attitude! I will just tell you...I am 37 yrs old and will probabaly never really grow up. I want my designs to have a flair of funky and whimsical to lighten up the day and make you want to twirl and dance.

Your clothing designs are funky and different , what happens if you get swamped with orders, any thoughts on how you would handle that?

When I get swamped: Freak Out totally in excitement! Hire my wonderful seamstress daughter, (yes at 14..she almost ready) If HipChic Designs became a way to bring back a small portion of sewing industry back to the US it would be incredible. It could happen...

I actually have a dream of a Large Old home...it's already been picked out for many years, in which I would open a retail shop for my designs, a fabric shop, classrooms for instruction....oh and of course coffee lots of coffee! aaaah some day :)

THATS A LOVELY DREAM!
Any advice for woman getting started in boutique clothing or anything you have learned so far. Never give up on a dream....ever!! You will want to some days, but don't! Always be creative and do what you love. I take some time to sew just for me to keep it fun and not always about work and growing a business. Keep putting your ideas out there...it can be scarry, but you just have to push yourself to do it. And find someone or someones who are successful and learn from them.

Look to see me adding some more Mommy and Me items. Working on some dresses. And then because my designs take on a life of their own look to see the "whole look" pulled together...accessories and all!

Thats great advice Cindy and Very Inspiring. I have to say it was a real pleasure meeting you and I wish you much success with your new business.

So first tell us where your from and who you are, please:)

My name is Elisa Gollatz. I am a wife, mother, homemaker, scientist and children's clothing designer. I grew up in Pennsylvania and went to college in Pittsburgh to study Neuroscience. Upon graduating I worked in research laboratories in Academia. I continued to work after the birth of my first child Kiera, but retired from the industry after having my second child Kaitlin. When the girls were 4 and 3 respectively,I went shopping for their clothing. I was completely appalled by what was being marketed to our little girls. Why can't little girls be little!
Kknoodles was born. The name is derived from the girls nicknames, kk and noodle. Now I am a mother to four wonderful children, a clothing designer and very happy.

So do you think you are now following your "destiny" of who you were to become, those are 2 exttremly different fields!

So many people ask me that very question! Ironically, there is a lot of science that goes into design.. I have always loved the arts. At a young age I started playing violin and singing. I really think that designing is the perfect blend of the sciences and arts. Design merges two of my strengths making a perfect profession for me. Sewing has become therapy for my crazy life “ motherhood”.
When did you start sewing?

I began sewing when I was young. I can remember watching my mom sew in her sewing room. I was given my grandma's singer when I was about 13.. I have always had a unique style. I forced my mom to make me my senior prom dress. I hated the ugly poofy look!

Any advice for people getting started in boutique clothing
My advice to anyone is to do their research and start small. I have learned most of what I know about this business by going through it. Talk to many people who have started there own businesses. Find out what works and doesn’t work. It will save you lots of money and heartache. Start small and expand gradually. I have met so many women that started too big and very easily got overextended (physically and financially). Stay grounded and remind yourself daily the you love what you do.

What do you think about the concept "woman helping woman" ?Is there enough business out there for all of us and what makes your clothing different from other designers?

I am absolutely pro "women helping other women". I have nothing to hide. We all have different tastes and ideas. Let's work together. MY designs are "so me" I don't design things b/c I think other people will like it ,I design it b/c I love it. I think that is why my designs are different.

So first tell us where your from and who you are

I grew up in a very small town in New Brunswick and then moved to Calgary, AB in 1998. I've worked in various jobs (Hotel, Administration, Accounting, Retail) but by far, I love being home with my 2 girls. It also allows me the flexibility to sew while my youngest naps and my oldest is at pre-school.

When did you start sewing?

I have done embroidery, cross stitch, scrapbooking, cardmaking, knitting - from a young age, I did not start sewing seriously until just a couple of years ago. I grew up watching my mom who sewed us clothes, costumes and decor. So I guess you could say a bit of it rubbed off on me.

So this is your first time trying to "SEW and Sell" as a business, what made you jump into this--did you always think about doing this

I've always enjoyed being crafty and I'll admit, I have a bit of an addiction when it comes to children's clothing. I'm a total fashion wreck when it comes to dressing myself, but for my girls, it's so easy. After discovering etsy and seeing what others were sewing, it encouraged me to give it a try.

Your clothing designs are very cute and classic, what happens if you get swamped with orders, any thoughts on how you would handle that?

The key to it all though, is that my husband is very supportive of me. He takes the girls when I need the time to sew orders, doesn't complain when I come to bed late or have to sew all day on weekends.

What kind of machines do you use?

I bought my first sewing machine 4yrs ago from Walmart for $99! It's a Brother CS4000 (Computerized) and was an ok machine, but not really one I would recommend. For Mother's Day my husband bought me a Kenmore machine which I really like!

WHY?

It's a Kenmore MD-27 and I may just really like it because my old machine was so crappy! lol I did do some research before I started dropping hints to my husband and while Janome and Husqavarna were at the top of the lists for quality and great machines, they were out of my budget for what I could afford just starting out. That's when I started leaning towards a Kenmore. They are great machines when it comes to quality and are reasonably priced. For $300 you can get a good machine that has all the stitches you'd need for just starting out, as well as accessories (walking foot, 1/4" seam foot, etc).

Any advice for woman getting started in boutique clothing.

If you are not a pattern maker (I am not!), research your patterns. I found when I first starting looking for patterns that while there are a ton available on Etsy, not all are good. Some have poor directions, some poor pattern pieces or the outfit just does not fit correctly once sewn. Feedback is not always helpful as I found a lot of buyers would leave the feedback before they even tried out the pattern!

Also double their shop policies, everyone has a different policy when it comes to selling items made from their patterns. Some want credit on your listing, your hang tag, or want a licensing fee, which I've typically found to be in the $20-$30 range for unlimited production for at home sewers.

As well, be prepared! No one wants to receive a clothing item from you with out tags. Things like labels, sizing tags, business cards and hang tags take time to get in. You don't want your product out in the 'wilds' without a tag. As a mom of two girls I can't even count the number of times I've been asked where I bought an item they are wearing or playing with, a tag with your name/logo on one side and your online shop name on the reverse is an easy way for the buyer to share with someone.

What do you have coming up for fall
For Fall I have a new Top being added to my shop, more dresses in holiday fabrics (Halloween and Christmas) and I'm hoping to add yoga pants and wet bags to my shop. Just added three Classic Dresses, one of which is a give away!

The symbol of working women during the war, the Rosie look is personified first and foremost by trousers, which was something very few women wore up till that point.

Women's fashions in the 1940s focus mostly on the dresses, but for most women, their daily wardrobe consisted of loose, comfortable trousers or overalls and sturdy boots

Hair was carefully tied up in a colorful scarf

A "Rosie" might still wear lipstick and keep her eyebrows well-manicured, but she was an important part of the war effort, and style was not part of the equation.

Sewing Tutorials, Patern Testers...How to Take Measurements

Inseam: Take a pair of pants that fits you well. Measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the hem. Number of inches equals inseam length. **Make sure the pants fit well and hit just below the ankle.

Rise: Start the tape at the center back waist, run the tape between your legs, pulling comfortably at the crotch and up your natural waist. Total measurement is your rise. **Make sure to take this measurement with a daiper/pull up on if your child is not potty trained and will be wearing a daiper for photos.

Waist: Measure around your waist, against your skin (not over your shirt or pants) at the height you normally wear your pants.

Head: Measure around your head, from the center of your forehead, keeping tape straight and parallel to the floor. Measure around fullest part.

Bust/Chest: With the arms relaxed down at sides, measure fullest part of bust/chest, keeping tape parallel to floor.

Hip: Stand with heels together, keeping tape straight and parallel to the floor. Measure around fullest part.

Hey eveyone, Coming out with a new and original line of sewing tutorials! Need some pattern testers.. If interested, these are the requirements:
~what machines you use
~do you have a serger
~childs age and measurements and body type/lbs/ht, diaper? I am looking for children that would be considered average for there age
-sewing level beginner, intermediate, advanced? Pls think about this and be accurate
~photo of child, I'm a visual person:) Will design sewing tutorial with your child in mind
~have you used sewing tutorials, ebooks before
~size your child usually wears
~your adress and email
~turn around time
~digital camera, able to email photos?
~what kind of sewing turorial would you be interested in?
~Ages (not sizes) needed 18m,24m,2 1/2 diaper,2 1/2 no diaper, 3, 3 1/2, 4, 4 1/2, 5, 6

As most people know, I am moving from the lovely world of girls boutique clothing into the world of sewing tutorials, patterns and ebooks. I have just put together a line of Basic Patterns. From these patterns, I make all my designs. . These patterns work great on there own, and with a little knowlege of patternmaking or math you can turn them basically into anything. About Me

I have been selling clothing on Etsy for Two Years. I am now moving into a different market. Sewing Tutorials, Ebooks and DIY Kits.

I have been in business for twenty plus years and on etsy for the last two. I owned two stores and a small factory in NYC. I also did tons of trunks show before they were the "trend"!

I knew nothing about blogging, etsy, custom boutique, FaceBook or even computers for that matter until about 3 years ago, when shopping Ebay and coming across "Custom Boutique" A new world opened up to me. Now with almost 2,300 sales and 100% positive feedback, I am ready for the final push and to do what I really like which is to design,make patterns and write Ebooks.
